Someone above asked about what the Touche does that you couldn’t do with the LInnstrument. The Expressive-E / Haken Osmose IS going to support high res midi (and, unlike the Continuum, non-mpe polyphonic aftertouch - hello ultimate Zebra/Bazille controller)), and after using the Touche for so long the idea of what that will hold provokes almost too much excitement to bear. What it adds to non-MPE synths and hardware is just wonderful. You can’t combine two CCs to get higher resolution, which seems an incredible oversight given the physical experience of the Touche. My only issue with the Touche is that when using it for midi (including via DAW or standalone audio/synthesis app) it is limited to the 127 steps of 7-bit midi. To me there isn’t even an overlap- while on paper, they seem to address the same issue of multi-expression, the difference between pressing into a solid board with very little physical area to work with for a given note/sound vs having a deep range of motion for subtle expression is just night and day, and serves different musical purposes. Not ideal, but about the same as someone else above noted - right at the threshold, which is better than most, maybe almost all, such options right now. The physical feel is marvelous.įor CV, for whatever reason mine has been a bit finicky, and I haven’t spent enough time using it with my modular system, but when I"ve gotten it to work it’s been wonderful. I would, however, not hesitate to use it to play music that did not require such. It FEELS fantastic - I so wanted it to work, as it really has a level of physicalmusical connection that I find missing in even most MPE controllers that tout it - but in the end, for my purposes (which involve, I admit, an absurd amount of tiny-almost-imperceptible changes and nuance in performance - I’m one of those nuts who think they feel a difference using 14-bit velocity with pianoteq, but real or not, I DO feel it) the lack of resolution made it start to feel like other failed (for me) midi options. That’s pretty much stopped due to the low resolution. At first I used it primarily as a midi controller with, primarily, Zebra and occasionally custom Bidule stuff. FWIW I’ve had mine since a few weeks after they became available.
